1947-05-23

May 23, 1947 - September 8, 2011 OKLAHOMA CITY Sept. 8th, William M. "Bill" Scaife passed away of natural causes while biking at Lake Hef-ner. He was born May 23, 1947, in Glen Ellyn, IL to Margaret & Reid Scaife and grew up in a boisterous household with brothers, Bob, Tom & Dave. Bill graduated from Glen Ellyn H.S. and DePauw Univ. where he played football and participated in ROTC. He received his Master's Degree from Colorado Univ. Following in his father's footsteps, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the USAF and began a career as an Officer with early assignments in flying units. In '79 he was assigned to the 552nd ACW at Tinker AFB as commander of the wing headquarters squadron. Bill and Charlotte Winsett Little met professionally through their careers at Tinker. They married on New Year's Eve in 1980. Bill became a weapons director on the 552nd E-3 aircraft and subsequently became a mission crew commander. He flew missions all over the world, had additional assignments in Saudi Arabia and Langley AFB, VA, and retired a Lt. Col. in '90. Upon retirement, Bill accepted a position in Saudi Arabia as a civilian contractor training Saudi E-3 aircrews. Bill returned to OKC after 2 yrs and he and Charlotte settled in to "normal" civilian life which for Bill meant no coat and tie. While Charlotte continued her career as a social worker for the military and VA Hospital, Bill worked at nurseries happy with his no coat and tie work attire. Bill loved plants, flowers and working in his yard. Anyone visiting the Scaife home knew a gardener lived there. Bill and Charlotte enjoyed vacationing in WS where Bill also pursued his love for hunting and fishing. Bill is survived by his wife, Charlotte; sons, Dan & Rick & wife Lisabeth & grandson William & Lauryn & Haley; brothers, Bob & Tom; and Charlotte's children, Lauren Greer & husband Jerry & Braxton Little & wife Nance; grandchildren, Charlee Greer Johnson & husband Micahel, Jerry Greer, Skyler, Heartleigh & Phoebe Little. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, & brother, Dave. Everyone who met Bill knew they met a friend. He had the unique ability to fit in anywhere, but made no pretense that he was someone other than Big Bill Scaife, who was bigger than life, loved his wife & family, loved his little dog, Schatzi, told a good story, laughed at a good joke, and always had a root beer for the little boy down the street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans. Bill's family will be hosting a celebration of his life on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011 at Smith & Kernke from 2-5 pm, where they will greet friends. The family wishes to express gratitude to those who helped Bill at Lake Hefner and called 911

Bill and Family,  Grapes do well in Arizona!!!

So our crew at Glenbard between '62 and '64 was made of Dan Laffey, Colin Stinton, Bill Scaife and me. We hung out during the medieval years of high school when the really hot girls were going with upper class guys, when we were too young for a car, when there was no point to a girlfriend because your Mom had to drive and, of course, ask questions. My family transferred to Glen Ellyn near the end of fifth grade after two years in the third world (Greenville, South Carolina.) I was way behind in school. The local teachers meet with my parents. Their 50's technical term was, "He's slow." I wasn't that slow. I had just spent two years in southern schools having my brain scrubbed clean. It was a rough entry into a new school. Fortunately, my Dad had rented a house across from Sunset Pool. Laffey lived behind us. In sixth grade we walked to and from Duane Street School together with Dale Frier. We were tight. That helped because Laff and Dale were cool. Laffey was a prankster and there was nothing better than when he had a pocket of freshly stolen caulk on the walk home. He personally started an epic caulk war between the "Gregs" (Berhens and Hurst) that raged for months. My family bought a house the next year out on Park Blvd and I went to yet another new school, Wagner Junior High with Richie D'Andrea, Mick Curd and the comely Barb Johnson. It is funny being thirteen; I moved two miles and did not see Laff for two years. The world was pretty small back then, or maybe it was pretty big. Colin came in from Canada in eighth grade and we buddied up. He was hilarious. He could mimic Mr Hampshire, the English teacher who actually was English and used "bloody" as his only modifier and Mr. Berger, the math teacher who had only four fingers total on two hands as a consequence of his former life as a shop teacher. You could not pass on a friend with talents like that. The next year the four of us ended up on the three and five Glenbard West freshmen football team. Mostly we loafed and made fun of Coach Wilsey who was 5'4" and knew about as much about football as we did. Laff was the QB, Colin a fullback, Scaifer the right tackle and I was the right end. During the winter, Scaife and I sat at the end of the freshmen basketball team bench with Squirrel and Cano Hill. Mostly we loafed and made fun of Coach Livingston who was 5'4" and knew less about the game than we did. There is nothing like spare time and mediocre performance to form a lifelong friendship. Scaifer and I became best friends passing together through the traditional portals to male adulthood; we got drunk for the first time and threw up, double dated to the prom and got arrested. That completed our raggedy group. What we dreamed about was making movies. On the Saturdays, when there were no games, we would take the train (fifty cents) to downtown Chicago to see the first run movies (a buck) followed always by a meal at Tad's Broiled Steaks on Wabash - two bucks for a hunk of gristle, a semi cooked baked potato and some greasy Texas toast. I have had better meals, but not that many. Not just dreamers, we made movies: primitive, short, chopped, but movies. Some were just trick shots of jumping over cars, disappearing, one a cowboy chase, another a spoof of Highway Patrol with guest star Dave Lundstrom. We casted him because he looked exactly like Broderick Crawford. Dave was sixteen. You have to wonder what he looks like now. Laff was big on forming creatures in clay, clicking one frame, reforming the clay, taking another frame. Pixar calls it Claymation now. Laff was the creative, the mastermind, the camera man, the director. He was an artist, a great drawer, trust me, and check out my senior yearbook where he drew a forest of massive aged oaks. If you looked closely enough in the bark there were naked women, a lot of naked women. He won the Jaycees high school art award a couple of years and he went on to a long career in TV production and video photography. Colin was the performer; mimic, singer, actor. Our senior year, he starred with Laurie Anderson in the school play, some wretched Gilbert and Sullivan thing or whatever. Nobody went, but we should have. Laurie has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Colin acted on Broadway and in movies with James Mason, Matt Damon, Paul Newman and Robert Redford. We did not lack for potential. I was nominally the writer, although my primary contribution was that the camera was my Dad's. Unlike Colin and Laff, I didn't follow the dream. My lifelong writing accomplishments are limited to a second place finish in the romance novel division of the Bulyar- Lytton Literary Awards (worst opening sentence in a ficticious novel.)  My entry read: "Sex with Rachel at fifty was like driving the last place team on the last day of the Idiorod Dog Sled Race - the goal no longer victory but the finish line, the arguer not exhaustion, but keeping all the parts moving in the same direction, not to mention all that irritating barking." Scaifer was to be the producer, the muscle, somebody who got stuff done. He had the feel for what was good and the ear for what was funny. He got that from his brothers and the famously sweet Mrs. Scaife. Sentence to life with four boys and a retired colonel for a husband, she knew what was funny and what wasn't; she had to. Bill spent 20 years as an Air Force officer, the last five as an AWAC commander directing a 75 million dollar aircraft. He could get stuff done. As adults, we never made any movies together; we were swept on in the flow of life. Except for Bill and me, we lost contact: Colin to the London stage, Laff to Canadian TV, Bill to Saudi Arabia, I moved to California. Bill and Laff died this summer of 2011. It is hard to get your arms around that. I don't know, but do you ever make better friends then when you are fourteen?                                                             Dan Winters          September,2011
